For beginners I typically start with the Piano Adventure series, and supplement with other familiar tunes for holidays. Depending on interest, students will receive additional music. From early intermediate level I assign music from baroque, classical, romantic or modern eras, and technical exercises like Hannon or Czerny. Students are encouraged to bring music they would like to play. I customize short technical exercises to help in finger dexterity. Encouragement is key to my teaching style. Praising a students accomplishments motivates them to higher goals. Each student has different needs. What is good for one is not good for another. I have to be flexible in my teaching. Some students love classical music others love new age. I am willing to try new music, and try to listen to the students. I firmly believe in starting with the basics of singing for younger students, however they should have fun as well as learn. Giving them a choice in at least one song we do every so often, to me, is the way to keep them interested in the art. Every Saturday morning throughout high school I volunteered my time mentoring young saxophonists just starting out with the instrument. I was surprised, initially, at just how rewarding an experience this turned out to be. But soon I realized just how powerful an experience learning music can be, and how incredible the opportunity is to be able to help people through that experience in a fun and engaging way.
