Instruments: Cello
For beginners, I generally start with Suzuki, Hal Leonard's Essentiel Elements or Grant's Fundamentals of Violoncello Technique. For intermediate levels, I work on solo reperory of my student's preference/my suggestion. Read More
Instruments: Flute Recorder Piccolo
I always encourage students to find contemporary books with fun songs to try out, like a Disney series or pop songs. In addition, for those who are in school band, I highly recommend they bring in their materials at the beginning and have a lesson or two on them, especially if they have any solos or auditions pending. As the student advances, so do the materials. At the intermediate to advanced level, we will explore more technically engaging solos, and focus a lot on etude and scale work. Read More
Instruments: Drums
I have been teaching drums for 3 years and have found that teaching book work, but keeping it light and fun is a great way to keep students engaged and motivated. If the student isn't having fun then I am not doing my job. I both play and teach many different styles and can give advice on drum kits and cymbals, sticks, tuning and more. We will go over things like technique, rudiments etc while also learning songs, melody and song structure. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet Trombone Euphonium French Horn Keyboard
I believe every student develops at their own pace and has their own ways of learning. As a teacher I strive to discover with the student the most effective ways to practice so that musical goals are obtained in a way that is engaging and exciting for the student. This includes using different approaches to developing technique and the use of different styles of music depending on the student's interests. Read More
Instruments: Piano Violin Viola
I received my Bachelor's in Performance from Eastman School of Music. Shortly thereafter I joined the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra. In Boise, I taught privately as well as at Boise State University. In addition to instrumental lessons, I taught classes in music theory, aural skills, and chamber music. Recently, I performed with the Symphony No. One chamber orchestra in Baltimore, premiering new works written for the ensemble. Throughout my career I have had the opportunity to perform across the United States and in Europe. Read More
Instruments: Cello
I received my Master’s degree from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, studying with former LA Philharmonic Principal cellist Peter Stumpf, and my bachelor’s degree at Temple University, studying with cellist Jeffrey Solow. As a chamber musician, I have studied with Menahem Pressler, Mark Kaplan, Jorja Fleezanis, and Kurt Muroki. Other studies include masterclasses with Fred Sherry, Colin Carr, Tokyo String Quartet, St. Lawerence String Quartet, and Ben Zander. Read More
Instruments: Voice
For younger students, I tend to focus on the production of breath and basic sounds as they begin to grow into their body. This is to ensure that the baseline technique is there as they find how their instrument, the voice, is growing into their developing selves. For adult students of any technique, I prefer to start with basic vocal exercises to test the agility and flexibility of the voice so that I have an understanding of how their matured voice functions.
