For beginning students, I use the first Essential Element book to introduce the first instrument and theory concepts. Once students have progressed past this book, I use the Tune a Day series along with the accompanying scale book. This book introduces students to solo and duet pieces worthy of a recital performance. Once they have reached the third book and are progressing through etudes, students begin working on individual solo repertoire pieces. Read More

Most of my lesson plans are customized for each student, depending the style they are interested in, and the level that they are already playing. Generally speaking for beginners, I begin with teaching about the instrument (string names, frets, tuning, etc.). Then we move on to chords, starting with the easiest ones to play. Once they have grasped how the instrument and chords work, we continue on to melodies and simple 3 chord songs. Read More

I savor every opportunity to bring my passion for playing guitar to each teaching session. My aim is always to develop each student's strengths and weaknesses in playing; developing their knowledge of the instrument and music; develping their creativity in approaching different types of musical expression; thereby, increasing their love of the instrument and music. I approach teaching with an emphasis on developing a student's ear for music, carefully balanced with learning practical, rudimentary knowledge and musical theory for effective, well-rounded musical development. I believe that education is something that should be enjoyable, especially music. Music is something that inspires us and makes us happy. I encourage those ideas in lessons, and I focus on teaching students to play with musicality. For each individual student, I set reasonable goals for them at the end of each lesson. I also explain to them how to practice, and how to do so efficiently. Another idea I tend to focus on with my students is performance and how to practice performing. Read More

For beginning students, I like to start with some starting note learning drills on paper or going through some beginner books. I am a firm believer in that the more a student practices reading music, the easier it will come. I realize that some students learn music better by ear, and I will work to develop that skill alongside the essentials of reading the music on paper. As they progress, I hope to introduce different kinds of solo music in order to teach different skills and techniques that are involved, while still keeping the music fun and accomplishing the goals that the student wants to accomplish. Students progress is largely a function of time spent working toward their goals. I have heard it said that in order to become an expert at anything, one must only spend 10,000 hours doing it. This is roughly 40 hours a week for 10 years. Bass is no different. In order for students to spend this ridiculous amount of time on something, they must be excited about it. If it is something that they choose for themselves, they will be. Read More

My approach to teaching is something that I take very serious. I believe in being the best not being number #1. I love music and want to work with musicians who want to get better and take their music endeavors to the next level. One of my teachers at Jackson State University told us that as a musician you are supposed to get better as the years go by and as you get older you become even stronger if it’s vocals or instrumentals.
