Instruments: Piano Voice
For beginning piano students I typically use the Alfred Method. Once the student demonstrates a grasp of the fundamentals I introduce solo repertoire. For adults I typically use the John Thompson Adult Piano Course and we work together to find the solo repertoire. For voice lessons, I typically teach the bel canto style. I will work with vocalises that help develop breath control, placement and open vowels. I also use the Music Theory for Singers program to teach Music Theory and also use solfeggi to build sight singing skills. Read More
Instruments: Saxophone
To help you find the beauty and enjoyment in playing music, I will use all of my experience teaching, which includes not only music but mathematics and science. I have taught these two in classrooms and as a private tutor for 15 years. I have taught music primarily to more advanced musicians who were struggling to grow as musicians, and had reached a point where they felt they could not move any further forward. Read More
Instruments: Violin
My teaching experience began when I was first selected as the concertmaster of the Baldwin Wallace Symphony Orchestra four years ago! It was my responsibility to organize and run sectionals, where I instructed my peers in the art of refining, practicing, and mastering the challenging orchestral repertoire that we tackled on a regular basis. The following year, I started teaching children between ages ten and twelve. My main objectives were (and still are) the correction of form, the establishment of excellent fundamentals, and helping my pupils understand what's so great and exciting about playing music. My approach to teaching is rooted in a deep-seated passion for music and a genuine desire to inspire and empower my students. Here's a concise and detailed overview of how I approach teaching: Personal Connection: I believe in building strong relationships with my students based on trust, respect, and empathy. By understanding their unique personalities, goals, and challenges, I create a supportive and nurturing learning environment where students feel valued and encouraged. Read More
Instruments: Voice
I understand that many people take voice lessons recreationally, and that not everyone trains like a college student. I do, however, encourage all my students not to sell themselves short and set high standards for themselves. I acknowledge any and all progress that is made, and encourage my students to be proud of the sound they are making. If you don’t like your voice, then you certainly won’t sing for someone else. Not only does this relive the tension that tends to build when you have been intensely concentrating on a new tune but it leads to discovering bits of other songs (or creating your own tunes). 3) When you dont have your instrument in your hands or dont have time to practice, think about the songs you have been working on. My college roommate who was a violinist and the concert master at OCU said he spent as many hours practicing in his head as he did practicing with his hands. 4) Just keep your guitar, mandolin, banjo etc. handy. For beginning percussion students who are children, I typically start with Kennan Wylie's Simple Steps to Successful Beginning Percussion and Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals of playing and reading, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I like to find out what what the student is interested in learning, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep lessons engaging and fun, no matter the ability. Read More
