For beginning students who are completely new to the world of music, I typically start them with exercises and theory found in Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. This introduces them to the foundations of the guitar, such as basic chords, chord progressions, and the musical alphabet. Once they have the necessary understanding of the fundamentals, I then like to find out what music the student is interested in learning and apply these foundations in musical pieces they are familiar with. I have a degree from Wayne State University where I studied Jazz Guitar and Music technology. I've played in bands ranging from Big Band Swing to Country to Punk Rock playing guitar, bass and piano/keyboards. My studio is equipped with two amplifiers and the ability to record the student for playback. This provides a chance to hear oneself. In addition to this I have a library of sheet music including instructional books. Read More
Instruments: Flute
For beginning students (adult and children) I like to be sure that their knowledge about fundamentals is solid. I believe ear training is paramount. Not everyone can sing, but secure pitch discrimination can help all musicians (even percussionists). I encourage all students to participate in ensembles (band, choral also). Knowledge of phrasing is also important to aspiring musicians. Students need support from listening to others play (live performances, radio, and recordings). Read More
Instruments: Trombone Euphonium Tuba
I place emphasis on helping each student strengthen fundamentals, thus helping them achieve a phsysiologically healthy approach to playing. With these concepts under way, I will help the student develop their own unique interpretive skills and apply them to their individial interests in music. Above all, my goal is to help students to becomemusiciansfirst, and trombonists second. Read More
Instruments: Piano Organ Music
My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part-time 10 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 5 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

Hello! I am a driven, passionate, and adaptable music educator. I just graduated with my bachelors in K-12 music education from Eastern Michigan University. I have studied the saxophone as my primary instrument for over 10 years now. I have taught a various range of ages and abilities for saxophone, clarinet, piano, and more! I believe that every child deserves a quality music education. Music is such a special experience that helps people grow in multiple areas. Read More
Instruments: Piano
I listen to the student's music selections. While he/she plays, I observe him/her how this student is adapting to the instrument. After his/her performance, I offer constructive criticism pointing out steps to adapt himself/herself to the instrument. I also encourage and push for attentive listening for tone quality. This is very important no matter the level of students. The way to listen for tone quality is not only seating straight and at the center of the keyboard, but also understand when and how to use the bony part of the fingers(closer to nails) versus the fleshy part of fingers on the opposite side of nails.
