I base my teaching style on the individual student and how they learn.  Some students learn more by rote, others learn more by oral and others learn more by understanding theory.  I always incorporate proper technique so that the student developes as quickly as possible. For those students who like working from a more traditional sense I work primarily with the John Thompsen and Bastien Piano Methods. Whether it be to yourself, someone you want to sound like, or your favorite band, the best way to focus your efforts while learning is to know who you want to sound like and what kind of music you want to make. From there, everything else falls into place. There's no use spending long hours practicing techniques and exercises and scale patterns if it's not serving the purpose of helping you achieve your goals and if it's not helping you have fun playing music. I teach basic stick technique using George Lawrence Stone's Stick Control, and I have numerous hand exercises based on patterns from that book that I warm up with every lesson. Starting with snare drum and basic hand technique also will incorporate rhythm reading, and basic limb independence.
