Instruments: Trumpet Trombone Saxophone Euphonium Tuba
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun no matter their ability level. If the students need help working on a particular work for their school (ex solo ensemble, college audition, drum corps audition, concert band works, jury auditions, etc.) I am willing to help the students be successful. I am a student at Old Dominion University with only 2 French classes to go to graduate. I was a first chair clarinetist in middle school. I am currently playing tenor and Alto saxophones, drums, flute, percussion, and singing through various projects. I am self taught on a very large variety of instruments such as violin, recorder, guitar, and cornet. My most unique instrument is the jaw harp of which I am a virtuoso. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice Trumpet Trombone Recorder Euphonium
I began teaching trumpet privately 44 years ago. Over the years I have added voice, beginning piano, trombone, euphonium, and recorder to my studio. I encourage each student to practice several times a week for as long as they can. I find that some students like to practice in one sitting, whereas others prefer to practice for 10-15 minutes before taking a break and then returning. I convey to each student that working at your craft for 10,000 hours will make you an expert. Read More
Instruments: Piano
My teaching journey began in and throughout college in 2016, when I began teaching lessons privately, and after receiving my second degree, I teach from my in-home studio. Since I began studying at a young age, I have a special love and passion for helping my students with the piano. Teaching students from five years to 75 years, I am thankful my teaching experience has been very diverse; I enjoy the challenge of an advanced student, and the energy of a new student; always looking to bring on new students of all ages. Encouragement is one of the most important things for learning an instrument. I've heard from many students how much easier it is for them to take private lessons instead of being on display in front of a group. It can be disheartening to hear other players in a class setting who can play more proficiently than you. Private lessons offer exactly what it states: privacy. I want my students to be comfortable and safe and not feel judged on their journey of learning. Read More
Instruments: Guitar Bass Guitar Keyboard Electric Guitar Classical Guitar Acoustic Guitar
My methods will depend to a degree upon each individual student's musical tastes and ambitions. For example, I would put much more focus on developing picking hand foundations for a classical guitarist while the fretting hand would receive more early attention for the metal shredder. This said, there are common general goals that can be set for all guitarists as they track and improve their skills. The guitar is a physical tool, and it is learned as such: the student learns how to handle the tool, how to carry out the various uses of the tool, and how to apply the tool's uses to the art they wish to create.
