When it comes to children, I believe that structure is necessary. So, I usually assign arrangements from a book based on their skill level. In most cases, I use Hal Leonard books and move chronologically from beginner and onward. As students progress, I tend to shift more towards fundamental skills, like how to properly pick certain songs, how scales work, and how to build relevant chords. For beginning students (children or adults) I begin with an introduction to the major scale and implement it into our vocal warm-ups. Once the student has developed and progressed over certain aspects I will introduce repertoire that will be learned and performed at the end. I often create my own custom lesson plans because every student is different and requires certain attention. For beginning students I like to Rubank: Elementary Method to learn fundamentals. After learning fundamentals and introduction to solo repertoire or etudes will be used next. I like to try and find out what interests my students and tailor my instruction around their needs, interests. As each step is mastered we will move on to the next step , I like to use the Rubank method books, for elementary method, intermediate methods and advanced methods along with Selected studies book by Voxman. My experience as a teacher spans many subjects including not only music but also academics and physical education. I've worked as a gymnastics and motor skills instructor for children aged 3-5. I have been in charge of outreach programs through the Houston Food bank, traveling to various locations in the Houston area to give lessons on nutrition and physical fitness to children of all ages. My passion for teaching has extended into my graduate studies, where I focused on piano pedagogy.
