I tailor my materials, method, and philosophies to the ability and goal of each student. Typically, regular students can expect lessons to cover fundamental aspects of playing the saxophone (embouchure development, technique exercises, etc..) as well as the music and etudes we may be covering. For students with an interest in music theory or improvisation, I like to learn those things alongside common jazz standards so that the knowledge you obtain can be immediately applied in a real musical setting. I have been greatly influenced by Gyorgy Sandor's ideas (author of On PIano Playing and a former teacher at the Juilliard School), but have evolved my own approach. I have found that a student's motivation and commitment are more important than the methods used. Consequently, I modify my "curriculum" to suit their individual personalities and talents. Read More

My method of working with the voice is to first get a sense of what the student's goals are. These include both vocal goals and career/performance goals. We will then work together to form a plan to achieve them. This will include exercises tailored directly to the student's vocal needs and desires and guiding the student to repertoire that will both be fun for them to sing and will teach them more about the concepts we are working on.
