We have been lucky to play for many radio stations as well as performing with many todays top performing musicians, such as The Beach Boys, Gloria Gaynor, The Osmond Brothers to name a few. Often there are students with previous instructors and I have no trouble picking up where the student left off. I can recommend books or a series as well as supplemental skills practice books. At each lesson, I try to touch on different components of musicality. Beginning with tone and technique, posture and proper warm up. Then we work on pieces of music and incorporating theory, and playing musically. It is important as a teacher to set realistic goals for my students, acknowledge their accomplishments and to find out what inspires them. For beginning students in any genre, I begin with learning songs. Classical, jazz, bluegrass, and rock are more easily understood when you spend time playing the music with someone else. Repertoire is chosen with the understanding that fundamentals are key to life long participation and students find positive success when they are able to then share a completed work with their friends and family (think holiday get-togethers!)
