I love to see progress and excitement in my students. This shows that I am doing my job as a teacher! I always have a plan for the start and end of each lesson where we will discuss what we'll be doing during the lesson and then discuss what is to be practiced for the next lesson. I try to make lessons as fun as possible so I incorporate some games to make practice more exciting. Read More

Studying music is a process of never-ending exploration. Therefore, sparking creativity and curiosity in children and adults alike is my number one priority. When a student develops a curious mindset about their instrument and the sounds they can get out of it, they will continue to investigate, experiment, and improve beyond the weekly lessons. That is when I know I have done my job! Moreover, setting the students up for success is key. Read More

I always try to adapt to the student's preferences as far as learning, playing, length of lesson, amount of information, all-around comfortability. Goals are important, but so is acknowledging a student's progress and accomplishment / improvement. I do not believe in negative reinforcement, I'm very patient. Piano is a very difficult instrument to learn, at first it can be extremely overwhelming (especially for a pre-teen) so it's super important to take it one step at a time and have the first couple lessons be laid-back and relaxed, with no pressure. I first understand the interests, inspirations, and goals of my students. From there I tailor a lesson map that we can follow to achieve those goals. This often includes becoming familiar with fundamentals of the fretboard, music knowledge, and warm up and daily practice routines. A great way to learn the instrument is to listen and learn the music that my students love themselves. Together we can learn and eventually play the songs and guitar solos from our favorites musicians. Read More

For beginning children, I typically like to use the Alfred series of beginner books depending on the instrument. I also like the students to rely on their ears just as equally, so the other half of the lesson is usually dedicated to learning music without relying on reading music. Of course, this is all dependent on the student's needs or prior experience. More importantly, I want to teach the student what they are truly interested in with music, and I have plenty of material to discuss if they are unsure of this interest. Read More

For younger students, I begin lessons on basic elements of music, usually a method book that both teaches theory, ear training, and sight-reading. I introduce solo repertoire as soon as possible whether for a recital or for preparation for other solos. Typically I want to know what style the student is interested in and learn where they are lacking in skillset; moving forward accordingly. My only criteria for students is that they come ready to learn with an open mind, willing to try new things, explore and seek out excellence. Read More
