There are several methods I use as a professor and they're all dependent on the student, their age and their goals. If they are younger, I like to employ elements of the Suzuki method because subjects like musical notation and theory might be too dense for the student. If the student has the aptitude/and or the discipline I can begin to apply a more systemic approach in terms of practice regiments like scales, practicing sight reading, their rhythmic feel, and even ear intonation and sight singing if the student is prepared for it. I always start my lessons with a brief warm-up to get those fingers flexing! Then, we go through each assignment that was chosen for a particular skill development and look for where there is opportunity for celebration of progress/success. Guitar: For children, I begin with simple folk songs to teach them chords and strums. From there, we progress to picking patterns. For teens and adults, I use both folk songs and easy pop music. For both age groups, I encourage note reading and some classical work. For classical guitar, I use technique books by Aaron Shearer. I believe in individual piano lessons for my students. Traditionally I have taught using Faber's Piano Adventures and the Alfred Series. I also have used the Bastian series. I am a passionate, experienced musician with a special place in my heart for helping beginners. I have two years of teaching fifth grade, middle school, and high schoolers with flute and saxophone. I want to primarily work with young or beginner flute players to help build them up into prominent players and watch them grow. I have been invited to play professionally and for fun all over Southern Oregon since I was a Junior in high school, and since then have also been asked to come teach at many schools around the area.
