Instruments: Viola
For beginners, we'll start with the ABCs of Viola, and Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for Strings, along with Suzuki, Vol 1. We'll work on developing skills as a soloist, and simple duets that the student and I can play together. For intermediate students, we'll go further into the Hal Leonard books, and the Suzuki series, 2 octave scales, double stops, vibrato, musical phrasing. It's very important to enjoy the process of learning the viola, so I always want to make it fun! Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
I have found that this helps the student to progress more quickly and gain a true love of music. I also like to have my students work on a wide variety of repertoire, even if they would like to specialize in only one field. Coming from a liberal arts college,I find that having a specialty while also being well versed in other fields as well is important to a successful music study. Read More

Despite my young age, I've had extensive experience in Early Childhood Education as well as one-on-one music lessons. I gave my first lesson as a high school graduate to a neighbor who wanted to learn drums and start a band. I was able to provide a technical foundation for him to feel comfortable playing with others. In no time I was working with his band on learning songs to play at a school performance. Read More

My goal as a teacher is to make the student an independent musician as quickly as possible. For this, I work on developing multiple musical areas, from piano skills, to aural training, theory, sight reading, and more to make the student a well rounded and competent musician. The student should expect to have weekly assignments as well as practicing 3-4 days, if a beginner, or every day for intermediate for at least 30 minutes a day. Read More

I am a musician and an artist; my heart sings when music plays and I love nothing more in life than spreading the joy that music brings. In 2015, I graduated from Humboldt State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Flute Performance and a minor in Cultural Anthropology. I spent the following 5 years traveling through Europe (for flute), Trinidad & Tobago (for steel pan), and Cuba (for congas and flute). Read More

Flowing between the presentation of new information and the actual active playing music is very important to the way I conduct lessons. Especially for the young, I place much more emphasis on facilitating musical experiences rather than the integration of musical nomenclature and conceptualization. When we learn to speak, our ears guide us first, and we imitate. Writing and reading comes later. I've found that this pertains to music as well, if not even moreso. Read More

From experience, these are all the basic tools a student needs to work on their fundamentals before diving into full fledged solo pieces for competitions. Beginning students have to start from the bottom. These students will start by learning how to hold the violin and the bow, for example, and slowly but surely get into reading music and eventually playing simple scales and melodies from an elementary book. Some adults, however, may be interested in learning an instrument because they want to play a song they love. Read More
