For students who are just beginning, I typically start with Alfreds Drum Method Book 1. Mostly for learning basic music notaion and theory. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I begin to introduce drum set music notation and theory from the Tommy Igoes Groove Essentials 1.0 book. I have been playing Flute for almost 40 years, Bassoon and Saxophone for 35.  I have at one time or another played with some of the world's best ensembles (i.e. The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra) and in some of the very best venues in with world (i.e. Royal Albert Hall in London).  My training was entirely in classical music, in the last 7 or 8 years, I have branched out into Rock and Roll, Blues and Latin Jazz. I have spent my entire life working the arts.  In high school I was a member of choir, band, theatre and jazz band. During my Air Force Years I attended the University of Maryland with my primary focus on musical theatre. Traveling the world and working with multiple theatre organizations has been an expirence that few can say they have done. For beginners, I start with Suzuki school violin and guitar books. Once the student has a grasp of the fundamentals I introduce pieces or may have the student pick out a pice they'd like to work on. For more intermediate players I generally try to help them with music they may already be working on and give them studies to practice relevant techniques. I typically start students who don’t know how to read music with Kevin Olsen‘s book called “The Perfect Start.” I then supplement that with my own approaches to teaching to note reading, musicianship, theory, sight singing, and composition. After a few months, the student will be transferred over to such books as Fabre and Fabre.” I truly try and streamline a students experience and lessons towards pieces and music they are interested in playing.
