I don't believe that there is any single "right" way to make or produce music. Music is an international language that transcends boundaries of statehood, culture, and identity. As a South African, I was raised on the drumbeats and rhythms of traditional Zulu and Xhosa folk music. Upon moving to the UK, I received classical "western" training in drum kit, chorus, and piano. I believe that I have a natural talent for teaching. I was able to solve varied problems or my students. Whether it is stiff hands, bad hand position habits, inability to play polyrhythms, articulation issues, phrasing and ornaments or a general frustration at being unable to control the sound, I have demonstrated time and time again that these problems are not insurmountable. I encourage, when applicable, parent participation, their help and support but if these positives are missing, I found a way to redeem the situation and that resulted in tremendous self-esteem boost of my piano pupils. Depending on the level and specific interests of the student, I garner my curriculum towards their needs. For beginners, I start with Alfred's beginning drum method, and as they progress I incorporate my own additions to the material, as well as digging into the interests of the student. I am big on sharing recordings with students and introducing them to worlds of music they have likely not heard before. It is extremely important to set realistic goals for each student. I accomplish this by isolating each issue and not trying to spend one lesson addressing everything. Instead of overwhelming the student, I try to set realistic and obtainable goals for each student while retaining the challenge. As the student improves, I gradually start setting more challenging goals according to each student's ability.
