 It was while in college that I was asked to play with the Western Jazz Quartet - the resident faculty jazz group.  I also performed with the Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, Marching Band and other student groups.  I currently perform with Chris McCourry, Director Jazz Studies for Hillsdale College, in a quintet that performs regularly on Thursday nights. My first teaching experience was my junior year of high school where I got up every Friday morning before school to teach a 6th grade clarinetist who needed some extra instruction as she was blind. My favorite thing about teaching is that no two students are the same; and no two lessons with the same student are either! It is so important to establish a goal for a student to work towards, so that they know what they're practicing for. Not huge goals either that are months away, but goals that can be accomplished between each lesson. The best part of the job is seeing students get excited for music, and being able to grow in such a way that they're able to put their personality into their performances. Read More
