Instruments: Voice Music
I started to teach privately in June 2012, teaching both voice and early piano. I teach students out of their homes, or a space of their choice. I have mostly worked out of their local schools or churches. I encourage and emphasize regular practice on a consistent schedule. I encourage hard work, but also fun when practicing, and during lessons to help maintain a student's growth and interest. I encourage my students to enjoy their instrument and encourage them to find music they wish to learn that interest them, as well as classical pieces. Read More

Hi! My name is Darrin, I've been playing guitar, mainly as a hobby, for over 40 years. I have been in bands for most of that time and have played 100s of gigs. My experience spans a diverse musical mix. Acoustic/electric. Covers/originals. Oldies, rock, pop, punk, heavy metal, blues, classical and a little country. I have taught off and on for about 5 years and love to see my students experience the joy of learning and playing music. Read More
Instruments: Guitar
I use the "CAGED" system on guitar as a way to navigate the fretboard and understand the patterns on Guitar. I always put a strong emphasis on being able to learn a song by ear and understand the theory behind it. For younger children I use the Hal Leonard Method book to give them the ability to read Music. I teach all styles and advanced lessons including Ear training, Theory, Chord Building, Modes, Scales, and Technique. Read More
Instruments: Piano Keyboard
I use a variety of methods, custom-fit for each student individually. I teach Classical and church piano, along with sightreading, ear training, performance techniques, music theory, and other techniques specially designed to give my students the most well-rounded learning experience possible. I tend to prefer Piano Adventures for younger students and teens, and incorporate use of the corresponding app whenever possible. I also focus on helping students learn to play by ear, since I believe this is the quickest way to feel a mastery over the instrument! Read More
Instruments: Bass Guitar
I began teaching when I was 15 years old, which was around the year 1984,in Brooklyn NY.I studied music at Samuel J Tilden High School and taught bass at Meyer Levin J.H.S two afternoons a week after school..In 1989 I moved to Charlotte NC, attended college and began working in various bands.I had to stop teaching for a short period of time due to my busy gig schedule. It wasn't long before I discovered that there was something missing in my life, and that something was teaching music.I have taught students from the ages of 9,which is the age that I started playing, all the way up to 60 years old.I encourage my students to practice and to have fun at the same time.I want them to not be afraid to try something such as listening to their favorite music and attempting to play it by ear. That is what I did when I was taking lessons. It is good training for the ear. When I see my students develop their craft and a love for music, that is one of the greatest feelings. I've learn a lot from touring and being a professional musician, but I also gained a ton of knowledge from several highly skilled Berklee professors. With certifications in both Guitar Specialization and Music Theory, the methods and skills I teach will have most beginners playing songs and understanding how music theory works in no time!! I have been teaching since 2016 and currently have several students who have been taking lessons with me for years. Read More
Instruments: Piano
I think my approach to teaching piano is highly individualized. What motivates one student will not necessarily motivate another. Brief example: I currently have a student who likes to give me really "hard" high-fives after he has accomplished something. While he is adorable and he will work really hard to give me that high-five; this wouldn't work on many other students. Whatever will inspire my student to practice is what I will provide whether that is praise or stickers. Read More
