If I am teaching beginners I will focus on developing proper technique (i.e. hand placement and crossing strings). How one ends is contigent on how they start, so I make sure beginners have proper technique before moving on to repertoire. I will also have beginners go through the Hal Leonard method books to ensure they have the theory necessary to progress. However, I dont pressure anyone too much - I dedicate some time to improving on a difficult task, but I do not spend an entire lesson drilling the same thing, for it gets exhausting and unpleasant. I focus on getting to know and understand each student and their goals to customize lesson plans for that individual, all while covering the essential and important fundamentals.
