The philosophy underlying my teaching method can be summed up this way: If you can say it, you can play it. "Wop bop a loo bop a lop bom bom!" I'll bet I can teach you that rhythm quickly if I say it to you. And once you say it, it's easy to play on the drums. Some people play by ear and others by note, but I think it's best to do some of each. Read More

Older students will also play from Rochut's Melodious etudes and the Rubank Advanced methods. With older students I also like to transition into some more challenging arenas such as the Blazhevitch books. Any advanced students who want to focus on jazz will be using the Jazz Conception Method. Beyond lesson and etude books, all students will, as part of their lessons, have required listening assignments to further build and conceptualize our ideas of good playing. Read More

I also believe in the development of basic vocal and keyboard skills, to better understand the musical materials which we are learning to play on the guitar. Long-term goals are developed with students, based on the students' interests. For one student, it might be writing enough songs to play a set, or to record as an album or EP; for another, it might be learning a repertoire of jazz standards; or transcribing enough solos by a master - Jim Hall, Wes Montgomery or Django Reinhardt, for example - to begin to understand their style; it could be learning to make rock riffs really sound rocking; or developing a strong enough sense of time to groove on funk music with a drummer. The teaching style that I use is to get to know my students and keep a fun and engaging atmosphere. I try to convey that the goal of learning an instrument is to play music, so I always save time for playing songs or jamming together. I always found that my best teachers were kind and lighthearted individuals that understood my needs. I try to be the same for my students. Read More
