I try to customize my teaching style based on what I observe each student needs. Some are visual learnings, in which case I do lots of demonstrating on my own violin. Other students respond very well to imagery, and listening to their own imagination/instincts. Some students need more systemic discipline, others require more freedom and nurturing. I also effectively utilize technology, such as Finale notation software to create special arrangements of songs for my students, YouTube videos for audio/visual support, and iPads. I am comfortable teaching with many piano methods. Some of my favorites include Alfred, Faber and A Dozen a Day Series. For more advanced students, I often recommend the Music for Millions Series or Bastien Piano Literature. For jazz, I often use Hal Leonard's "Your First Fake Book" and the "Joy of Jazz". All my students also get a strong foundation in scales and theory. I also stress learning all the notes on the grand staff and there are many good apps for this on tablets and smart phones. Therefore, I will set realistic goals for my students so that they are not overwhelmed, but at the same time are constantly engaged and challenged by the material.
