Generally two pieces are assigned for students to work on and that work is continued for several weeks. I emphasize sight reading and rhythm. That being said, sometimes learning songs (covers) can be the best way to learn quickly and it can be a lot of fun. Something I've done many times too is writing precise exercises for students in order to address and target specific needs.
