I've been playing piano for 45 years, and have taken private lessons a total of 15 years with three different teachers.  Music is my passion, and so is teaching, so it brings me a lot of joy to share this with my students.  Music has taken me down many avenues in my life, starting at a young age.  My family are all musicians, so it has been a constant in my life.  At one point I played for church, and as a teenager I played for a ballet class.  Like I mentioned before, I've done many weddings and funerals, and look for any opportunity to play piano. I have been teaching drumset since 2004 and piano since 2012. I have taught at Mom's Music in Louisville, Kentucky and Ohio State University. I teach students from all ages and backgrounds and teach drumset at any level and piano from beginner level to intermediate. I performed in the school choir throughout my education and I also performed in my high school's concert band. My areas of specialty are rock, heavy metal and classical, though I have taught students the music of other styles such as rap, Christian pop, and country. Read More

Depending on the level of the student and instrument, I incorporate a mixture of theory, aural skills, technique, and repertoire. All of my piano students play Hannon exercises to build up their finger strength and dexterity as well as scales. Vocal students and guitar students likewise learn scales and exercises for the sake of technique. All students start each lesson by practicing reading rhythms at varying complexities, then creating their rhythmic patterns. Read More

Music lessons can incorporate a variety of approaches depending on student preference and abilities. Some students love to read notation. I encourage these students to develop auditory skills through imitation games and improvisation. Other students play by ear and prefer to memorize all pieces. I encourage these students to learn to read notation and to look at the notes when playing familiar pieces. For young children, I create short musical tunes they can read using colors. Read More
