Most of my experience with teaching has taken place while traveling on the road and helping individuals prepare for recording sessions. However for more than 10 years now, I've rendered my services at neighborhood schools (elementary and high school); music workshops; private homes; and local churches; working with young people as an assistant teacher, private music teacher and/ or teaching artist. As a student, you should expect opportunities to express yourself in music, find enjoyment with the arts, exceed your own expectations, and experience continual learning. I want to guide my students to the music that inspires them, and has them enjoying the music they are making. I look to make lessons educational, productive, but also simply as fun as possible. Therefore, I always find the best way to deal with the difficult part of the piece and make it interesting. I have made sure to transfer all of these skills to my private teaching. I am very direct with my students and act as facilitator in lesson discussions, and to try not making decisions for them. I heavily employ the "trial by fire" and "sink or swim" methods, as I've found those the most effective in my lifetime of learning new things. However, I am flexible in going back and reteaching and remodeling, as long as we still keep our "eyes on the prize", whether that be personal rewards, scholastic musical awards, musical career advancement, music therapy approach/feelings, etc. Read More
