My methods of teaching are teaching what and how to practice. The basic ingredients in music are scales and chords and space. I am a firm believer of playing with a rhythm section from the beginning. Because of this, I use devices such as playing with tracks, myself, and other people. I provide audio and visual examples using recordings and videos. It is a myth that, with music, you either have it or you don't. Read More

Every person has different strengths, weaknesses, motivators, and goals. I like to keep all of these things in mind before I start designing a lesson plan for each person. I like to make sure that I am teaching both the ear to listen and the eye to read, so I make sure I can improve the development of both by providing effective sight=reading and aural exercises in every lesson. Shortly after my graduation and subsequent marriage, I began a teaching career that has included private piano lessons, small classroom groups, combined piano/voice lessons at a private music school, and being a homeschool educator to my own three children! I am a skilled accompanist, which requires remembering that your job is to uplift and support the group or individual performer as they sing or play. I have accompanied many church choirs, school choirs, vocal and instrumental recitals, and ensemble groups. Read More

I have been teaching for over 30 years, and I love working with children. Regular practice is important so that students can see progress and reap the rewards that come with it. I meet the students where they are at, trying to work with their particular style of learning. My lessons are based in classical music, but we learn many different styles of music as they progress. The teaching association I belong to has four festivals a year, which I encourage my students to participate in, where they perform pieces and receive constructive feedback, helping them to grow as musicians and to become comfortable playing for others. I believe in meeting students where they are and catering lessons to their specific learning styles. Not everyone learns everything in the exact same way. While I do teach using standard, classical repertoire more often than not, my goal as a teacher is to help my students develop a deep love and passion for music; hence, I often find it incredibly helpful to branch out into other genres! I've taught show tunes, pop, rock, and even video game music to my students. Read More

My Grandmother inspired me to play piano. My church taught me to sing. In high school I was involved in band and choir and was selected to tour Europe with a college group. To this day I work with foreign exchange students. In college I continued my musical studies although I majored in Public Relations. This allowed me me to take classes such as oral interpretation and work in radio/TV which enhanced my performing skills. Read More

For beginning piano students I typically start with Faber's piano adventure series--I typically have students work through the lesson, performance, and theory books while providing them with additional repertoire on the side (pop, disney, classical pieces etc.) For voice students, I typically spend about a third of the lesson working on technique--proper breathing, posture, extending range, working on tone quality etc. Then the rest of the lesson is spent working on solo song repertoire.
