We set realistic goals for pace and have fun. I often mix traditional work with fun work. For example, alongside conventional ways to learn melody and harmony, I'll tie those lessons into specific songs or pieces of music that the student likes, to show the relevance of the material and the importance it has, at the same time keeping the student interested. For all students (beginners and students with prior experience) I begin with teaching scales and arpeggios. Scales and arpeggios are the foundation of keyboard technique, and are found in all piano repertoire the student will encounter. I generally use the Macfarren Scale and Arpeggio Manual for older children/adults (those who read music) or the Scales, Chords, Arpeggios, and Cadences: First Book (Alfred) for children. If my student cannot read music I teach them scales and arpeggios without music, while teaching them how to read music from a method book. Read More

For beginner guitar students I use Mel Bays You Can Teach Yourself guitar . I emphasize chords and technique and playing melodies. For piano students I teach students first to listen and immitate and then read. Once they master some basics in reading music I introduce chords. My vocal students start each lesson with warmups and apply the techniques to the songs that they are learning. For beginning folk/pop guitar students I use the Hal Leonard Guitar Method. For Classical guitar I use a combination of various resources, including Segovia scales, Sor studies, Guilianni right-hand studies and Frederick Noad method books. I definitely encourage students to work towards performance of the music they are working on, and try to schedule recital/performance opportunities as students deveope and gain mastery over their material.
