I've been teaching piano for over 10 years, teaching both privately and in group classes. I've taught students from 7 1/2 to 75. My passion for teaching has extended into my graduate studies, where I focused on piano pedagogy. In addition, I've spent the last 5 years working in a University Teaching Center, working with faculty members and graduate students on how to improve their classroom teaching! All of this thinking about teaching informs how I work with students, based on research and personal experience. Read More

I like to set my students up for success. My job as a teacher is to help them reach their goals but also introduce them to other styles and methods that can lead to alternatives never before seen by them. I often set up a routine for the students to give them a sense of steadiness . The pace a student learns at is up to the individual, the important thing is that they learn the right way. Read More

For beginners, which is mainly what I've taught so far, I try and see what their goals are and teach them accordingly. Both students I've taught have had entirely different goals, one just trying to learn drumset and the other wanting to learn a song for his talent show. The first, I taught using my own books that I have learned from, and the second I taught by just going through the song slowly, taking it apart, and learning it section by section. Read More

When it comes to drills/exercises/scales/etc., I try to use challenging pieces to substitute for them as much as possible. This makes practice more enjoyable, and gives the student more pieces (as opposed to exercises) to play for family and friends while still building on their skills and keeping them challenged. A huge part of music is collaboration and performance with others, so I make playing along with others on various instruments a part of my teaching once the student is sufficiently skilled for it. Instruments: Piano Voice
At my studio, I emphasize the importance of committment, determination, and excellence because not only do those apply to music in regards to practice, performance, and continual growth, but also to life's princinples. My students are encouraged to perform at recitals, enter competitions, compose their own material, and listen to other music they are interested in playing, that way they stay motivated to learn. Last, I like to reward students for their accomplishments and their progress in their musical journey to success. Read More
