Instruments: Piano Saxophone Flute Clarinet
For young beginners on wind instruments, I really focus on getting a good sound out of the instrument first. Then, I have them learn simple songs by ear to strengthen their relationship with the instrument. At the same time, I will teach them how to read music if necessary. I like to use the Rubank or the Sound Innovations band method books to start with. For my piano students, I go over posture and hand position first, in addition to the basics of the keyboard and fingerings for scales. Read More

And teaching music only helps with that. My goals for my students is for them to not only survive in a musical and academic environment, but to thrive and exceed my expectations. To not become the perfect musical machine but to know enough of the basics to relate music to their everyday life. To have good memories with their peers and a time to express themselves in a healthy way. Read More

The way I teach is the way I was taught, using methods that were in place when I was a kid, some of these techniques date back to the 1800's. I believe in teaching scales, and also the Carl Czerny exercises and etudes, pieces that are designed to get beginners up to the advanced level. I incorporate elementary theory into the scales by including chord cadence patterns and inversions so as to make the technical transition from method books to playing actual classical pieces and songs as smoothly and as quickly as possible. My career in Music Education began in elementary school when I accompanied my Sunday School holiday programs on the piano at age 10. During my teenage years, I accompanied my church and high school concert choir. After graduating from college, I became certified in music and decided to teach piano full-time. I wrote a curriculum and established my own music studio which has expanded into a music education program that provides music instruction to pre-school-12th grade students in state educational institutions, charter schools, churches and camps. I have enjoyed teaching music since I was in High School. I I enjoy using my experience as a multi-instrumentalist to teach students about the joy of playing with others. Social dynamics in music are important and once a student can learn the basics, I really enjoy encouraging them to find others to play with and learn to experience the music they enjoy on their own. Of course theory and regular practice are both very important. Read More

I do believe in the fundamentals of music and ultimately, no matter what you hear, learning music is not re-inventing the wheel. There is technique, reading music and understanding the basics of how the particular instrument works. I like the Essential Elements for Guitar or bass for guitarists and bassists and Alfred's Piano method books. Ted Reed's Guide to Syncopation is a good drum book. Ultimately I like to get the know the student as much as I can as soon as I can so I can help them get to what they want as soon as possible with a few laughs along the way. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice Flute Keyboard
For voice students, I have my own curriculum to help them know how to use their voice in a good way. For piano beginning students I typically start with Piano Adventures method. For Flute students, I start with Rubank Elementary method. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire. I have song lists that have songs in different styles and levels for the student to choose from, and I also encourage students bringing songs they like to keep the lessons engaging and fun. Read More
