My teaching style is to be sensitive to each student. Each person has a different relationship and understanding of music. I try to identify and accommodate the ways in which the student learns best. Some students need explicit instruction and to be pushed, others need gentle guidance with time and space to work things out for themselves. A student's personality and ambitions will inform whether they need a relaxed environment or a more assertive variety of instruction. Read More

For students of all ages, I start with a small book focusing on the essential elements of the instrument while teaching them something fun and recognizable. As basic techniques are acquired and musical concepts are grasped, I tailor the lesson to what the students long term goals are. An example would be a 12 year old on violin wants to excel in his or her orchestra program, so I pick certain pieces, books, and techniques to teach that will help them accomplish this. Read More

From working in childcare for over 15 years to being a Montessori pre-school teacher to training adults in different job fields I can teach all age ranges of people. Teaching is something that comes natural to me. Sharing the experience of learning a new skill to mastering it, is very rewarding to me. I enjoy motivating and making a hobby or passion fun and fulfilling for an individual to experience. I am accepting of all and everyone as long as they have a passion for piano and learning the foundations of it! Read More

For Piano students: I teach from Faber and Faber (age appropriate volumes) and encourage a disciplined home practice routine that includes a practice log and weekly goals. Solo pieces added over time. Performances - even if only an in home recital for a few family members and friends - are encouraged about once a semester. For voice students: I teach very tailored lessons to suit individual goals, even if the goal is just to sing better in the shower. Read More
Instruments: Piano Flute Piccolo Music
For flute beginning students, I usually start with the Essential Elements. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their skill level. For flute intermediate to advanced students, I try to find out what the student is interested in, what they have previously worked on, and what their goals are musically. I like to focus on fundamentals such as extended scales in various patterns, etudes geared towards development of a specific technical aspect, and solo repertoire containing these fundamentals. In high school, I was blessed with an incredibly patient, thorough and talented choir teacher. He taught me the fundamental building blocks of musicianship as I understand it best. To this day, I use the key concepts I learned from him in my lessons. 1) Rhythm is the most important element of music. 2) Understanding the importance of persistence, practice, and patience with the instrument. 3) You can manufacture energy and put it into your music.
