I always use scales as warm ups for the hands, even if they are very basic for new students. I often try to include a “student challenge” most weeks in order to gauge how much a student is understanding during the lessons. Rudiments require attention and practice, but there is much more to learning an instrument than just technique; passion also needs nurturing.
