With my wind instrument and percussion students, I like to start with a method book. My favorites include Essential Elements and Standard of Excellence. I find that, especially for younger students, this is a great way to introduce beginner theory while learning to apply it to their playing. In addition, whenever time allows, I like to encourage their creativity by composing small songs related to the subject we are learning. I'm relatively new to the teaching life, but I love it regardless. I started in September of 2018 with one student who I taught throughout the semester, and seeing him grow throughout the months was satisfying unlike anything else I've experienced. I taught one student a semester due to my school commitments but still managed to teach them a lot and open their eyes to the world of music.
