For my younger learners I use elements of the Orff and Suzuki Technique, balanced with a play-based approach. The main feedback I get from parents is kids forward to my lessons because I do lots of games, use a light approach, and are always very encouraging. The most important aspect is keeping kids motivated. I believe reading music important, but only one part of playing music. We learn to speak before we learn to read, and I believe in encouraging kids to listen, improvise, and explore the keyboard. Read More

I began piano study at the age of 5 and began teaching privately at a young age.  I have taught piano and been staff accompanist at Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pa. and Fairmont State University in Fairmont, W.Va.  I am a member of: Music Teachers Association of California, Music Teachers' National Association, National Guild of Piano Teachers, American Guild of Organists, AFM, Local 47.  She is a founding teacher for the Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory:  The Achievement Program.  I adjudicate for MTAC, MTNA, NGPT, SYMF and other California festivals and competitions.  I present lecture/recitals on women composers and their music at a variety of conferences throughout the United States and had the privilege of premiering the First Piano Sonata by Nancy Van de Vate at the 2001 Amalfi Music Festival in Italy. I start with teaching the student a song, at his/her level, by listening to the record and by my example. After that I like to go back and give written out exercises and notes on what we did in the song.
