With beginners, I provide material that teaches about finger numbers, rhythm, note learning, and basic material. As the student progresses, I asses their learning style and provide the necessary material and suggestions as to what books and miscellaneous learning tools the student will need. My preferred method of teaching is through the book, Piano Adventures by Faber Faber. For beginners, I would first teach them the basic sitting and hand postures, basic note-reading, and basic music theories. After they know how to play piano in an appropriate posture, I would like them to start with Hanon piano exercises. I believe it is a great book to warm up the fingers and a great finger exercises for all levels of piano players. Students will likely begin in a method book of some form, and eventually will use supplementary material as needed. The method books for Younger students typically consists of 3 or more levels depending on their skill, while the method books for older students provide a good outline of the technique for the instrument. I began teaching music in 2006 while still in college, and I have worked at a variety of different music schools and teaching companies, most notably at the University of Southern California. I taught and maintained a small voice studio of my own in New York City for four years before the pandemic forced me back to the west coast to care for my family. I want to know what moves them and inspires them, so I can adapt my instruction to their needs.
