I am familiar with many different series of method books (Faber, Bastien, Piano Town, Thompson, etc.), but will determine what the student needs based on their age and how much they know about music in general. Learning should be fun for everyone! My main question to beginning students is: Why do you want to learn to play the piano? I believe keeping my lesson plans in line with a student's particular passion for music is the key to success. For younger students, I like to use the Leila Fletcher piano books, unless they (or their parents) express a preference for another lesson series. For adults, the lesson books I prefer to use, if any, will vary by what the student wants out of their piano lessons. Read More

No matter the level of the student, I think it is important for them to have achievable goals to work towards. I like to have my students always preparing for something, whether it is an audition, recital, or competition. We do this by working on a combination of solos, etudes, fundamentals, duets, and sight-reading activities. Clarinet: Any beginning band method book, Baermann, Klose, Voxman. At advanced levels I will use appropriate repertoire and advanced method books tailored to the student. Saxophone/flute: Any beginning band method book or standard beginning to intermediate woodwind book. Appropriate repertoire. Piano: I use most beginning methods, including Alfred, Bastien, Piano Adventures (Faber), and other standard piano methods. My experience with teaching began during my undergraduate studies. I have worked with students in the classroom teaching elementary music as well as at the middle school and high school level teaching choir. In addition, I have taught my closest friends in piano and organ. While I was the staff accompanist at a high school, I taught the treble choir and gave piano and voice lessons during off-periods. I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching, especially when I see that students are inspired by music and are willing to take on the task of mastering their craft. Read More
