Instruments: Piano Flute Piccolo

I began teaching private lessons in 2005, and I have a variety of teaching experiences. I have since substitute taught every kind of subject, and I've taught general music K-5.  I have mentored conservatory level students when I was in grad school, I taught flute to non-flute music education majors, and I've taught undergraduate students that were pre-music.  I taught 3-8 year olds music at Laurel Hill Summer Camp in East Setauket, Long Island. I've also taught workshops on South American Folk Music with Alturs Duo, as well as flute masterclasses. Instruments: Piano Voice Keyboard

As a teacher, my experience started mainly during my college days. I taught a wide variety of ages starting at 6 years old all the way to 17 year olds. I really started teaching in earnest during the summer of 2012 where I took a job in Michigan as a Piano Teacher Camp Counselor. I taught over 50 kids of all different ages and skill levels improving vastly on the teaching methods I'd already developed. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Trumpet Acoustic Guitar

I prefer to do half-hour lessons for beginners and young musicians. After more lessons can be prepared, forty-five minute or hour long lessons are more appropriate. For trumpet students, I rely heavily on the Arban method for the essentials and then add other materials depending on the student's goals. For voice students, I begin with a vocal exercise book and a collection of songs to learn. For all my students, I encourage you to bring in your own materials to work on as well. Read More

Instruments: Piano Accordion Music Keyboard

My teaching style is all about steady, consistent progress. It is very valuable to dedicate even the smallest amount of time each day to practice. I like to provide my students a range of exercises to reinforce material that's already been learned, familiarize themselves with new concepts, and then a little bit extra if they feel inspired to branch out. I aim, also, to share my enthusiasm about music with my students. Read More

Instruments: Piano Keyboard

I see what ability level the student is at and then decide which method books would be most helpful.I will supplement with my own material when appropriate. For beginning students who are younger,I like Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and Alfred, among others. For adults I try and find out what the student is interested in accomplishing and tailor the lessons accordingly.I like to give each student a good backing of music theory and an exposure to a wide variety of styles.I want to have each student be open to all types of music. Instruments: Piano Saxophone

Every Saturday morning throughout high school I volunteered my time mentoring young saxophonists just starting out with the instrument. I was surprised, initially, at just how rewarding an experience this turned out to be. But soon I realized just how powerful an experience learning music can be, and how incredible the opportunity is to be able to help people through that experience in a fun and engaging way. Arriving at college I began tutoring part time, during which I honed my teaching skills in a more professional setting. Read More

For beginning students I prefer to use either Alfred's, Mel Bay, or Hal Leonard method books. I generally stay away from method books that use guitar tablature because I find that student will prefer to read the tablature instead of standard musical notation. Tablature is a good way to easily show how guitar parts are played, but is not useful when teaching standard notation, music theory, harmony, etc. In addition to using a method book, I will also teach the student popular songs, which is a great way to start teaching chords and song structure in addition to keeping the lesson fun and the student engaged.
