I prefer to do half-hour lessons for beginners and young musicians. After more lessons can be prepared, forty-five minute or hour long lessons are more appropriate. For trumpet students, I rely heavily on the Arban method for the essentials and then add other materials depending on the student's goals. Every Saturday morning throughout high school I volunteered my time mentoring young saxophonists just starting out with the instrument. I was surprised, initially, at just how rewarding an experience this turned out to be. But soon I realized just how powerful an experience learning music can be, and how incredible the opportunity is to be able to help people through that experience in a fun and engaging way. For beginning students I prefer to use either Alfred's, Mel Bay, or Hal Leonard method books. I generally stay away from method books that use guitar tablature because I find that student will prefer to read the tablature instead of standard musical notation. Tablature is a good way to easily show how guitar parts are played, but is not useful when teaching standard notation, music theory, harmony, etc. In addition to using a method book, I will also teach the student popular songs, which is a great way to start teaching chords and song structure in addition to keeping the lesson fun and the student engaged.
