As I’ve said above, as a teacher, I live for the “ah ha” moment. When a student is working on something, particularly something challenging, and they finally “get” it. Whether it’s a scale, a favorite song, a technique exercise, or a complex piece of music, there’s that moment. The moment it comes together and makes sense. It suddenly “clicks”. The pride and happiness and sense of accomplishment in this “Oh!” or “ah ha” moments is all over their faces. Read More

My word for private music teaching is, uplifting. The human connection is so key and its helping another person make music thats so amazing and such a joy. My adult and teen students and parents of the children I teach consistently say that the lessons I teach are not only about music, but they are therapeutic as well. My goal is that students make musical progress at each lesson and also feel uplifted and inspired. Read More

It depends on the student. Every student has their own pace and I believe in developing a student where they are at. Music is a lifetime to learn and concepts are different for every student. I am very patient when teaching and I will challenge when I feel the student is ready for a certain challenge. Growth is very important to me because it tells me I am doing the job correctly if I can give a student more advanced level material and they are able to perform it properly. Read More

It is important for both me and my student to have long-term and short-term goals. Long-term goals may have to do with technique--for voice, examples may be releasing tension or singing with proper breath support. Short term goals are more linked to repertoire and can be technical or musical. An example on the piano may be playing through a piece with a particular metronome marking. I have each of my students use a practice log so both the student and I can keep track of short-term goals. Read More

Ensuring my students leave each lesson refreshed, revitalized, and energized is essential for me as an instructor. If the student is not fulfilled and having a great time, then I am not succeeding as an instructor. Likewise, creating realistic goals for each lesson as well as long-term goals is paramount to the success, continued growth, and progress of the students. Music lessons are a collaboration between the student and myself. Read More

Great music lessons are a mix of solid technique building and fun application of those skills. I always spend the first few lessons getting the student familiar with the basic technique of the instrument, and then quickly move on to duets, improvising, sight reading, solos, etc. that tie in with the current technique studies. Music can also be heard or read, so I try to strike a balance between reading music/theory and learning/improvising by ear. Read More
