I have found some terrific methods that get students playing VIOLIN well right away and building up their muscles and endurance. For the first 4 books students get to play along with CDs so their intonation is honed; they learn to "keep up with others playing" and they are encouraged to stick with it through each piece. Later, the harder things like reading music notation, scales, vibrato and the positions are added. Read More

Instead of using existing method books which may or may not contain music that the student can relate to, I like to use the favorite songs of the student. Once the student makes known his/her request I then create an arrangement of that particular song and tailor it to suit their level ( beginner ,intermediate, advanced ). This ensures a high level of interest and motivation on the students part. For those students who insist on using method books I'm OK with that too ( So the traditionalists are welcome too). I am a graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Performing Arts where I studied Music Education. I also have a diploma in Piano Performance and Teaching from the Royal College of Music. I have been an instrumental instructor for the past 25 years, and enjoy sharing the joys of music with learners. I believe that learning to play an instrument should be an enjoyable experience. I acknowledge that all students are different and learn at different paces, so my teaching is tailored to accommodate each student's strengths, weaknesses, likes and preferences. Read More

I really covered this in the above information,so continuing in more detail,it really depends on each individual student, their level of ability and age that determine the course of study. It also depends on the instrument. Some instruments like piano, violin or viola, books are more practical because the music is notated. With most fretted instruments, music is written in tableture which was originally used for the lute and brought back i think in the 1970s.Its easier than reading music and is more practical for those instruments. For beginning students, I like to start from Essential elements, Suzuki 1, or Piano Adventures. Students will also likely have a theory workbook or worksheets that match the level of their current repertoire. Intermediate students, we will start using a program called smart music that plays the accompaniment for pieces that we are working on. This will really help develop a great internal sense of rhythm and help students recognize immediately when something needs correcting. Read More

I really don't follow a specific book or tool. As I wrote before, every person is different and I always try to empathize with my students. With the Internet, the tools are almost infinite. I focus on breathing and comfort singing. I use different warming up exercises for every person, depending on their needs. I am always excited when one of my student make progress, wheter is big or small. Read More
