Instruments: Piano Voice
Technique is certainly at the centerpiece of my teaching, for both voice and piano. You are your instrument, and training your body to produce music easily and efficiently is the primary goal. But I by no means think Classical music is the only genre of music a student should study. Both my voice and piano students are pushed to explore their musical boundaries, and learn how to play and sing a large variety of styles, from rock, to pop, jazz, and theatre. Read More

The modern, up to date PIANO books that I use introduce ALL the styles including classical, pop, jazz, blues, boogie and ragtime. These books also cover music theory, technique and provide performance pieces. All my school-age students like to play the MUSIC MOUNTAIN game, where they climb up with weekly points for practicing and learning songs by memory. We keep track with a special practice record book. Prizes occur every 100 points. Read More

I would also bring in different levels of books and studies for their specific level and instrument that they play. Air flow is a factor through all experiences since it helps with sound and tone so much. For upper levels we would work on specific music that they are working on as well as experiment with different techniques. Overall, my goal is for my lessons to be fun, informative, and engaging. The most rewarding thing is to start a new student-wherever their abilities are- and watch their passion for music and musical abilities grow. The most rewarding thing to me is when I see something that a student has struggled with "click" and they master it and move on. I encourage students through every lesson and each process of learning piano. I strive to keep it at a pace that is neither too fast or too slow for the students, all while keeping the lessons fun. My methods include a wide variety of resources. For beginning students I like both the Hal Leonard and John Thompson approaches. Along with the lesson books, i also encourage technical studies including scales, arpeggios and other studies to build up finger strength, dexterity and independence, As the student progresses, I introduce memory work, choring and basic improvisation. For the more advanced student I let them work on repertoire of their choosing, stressing a variety of genres and styles. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time. I have been consistently teaching students since 2018. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More
