I fell in love with classical music while watching Leonard Bernstein conduct the NY Philharmonic as a young boy.In 1979 I graduated from Eastern Nazarene College with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Music Education. For the past 40 plus years I have taught music to children and adults in school and church settings, and at a performing arts center. For beginning students, the Faber Faber series or the Alfred series are recommended as a core repertoire. A Dozen A Day is recommended for daily warm-ups and I also provide the students with supplementary songs and books of their choice, such as Disney, pop, jazz and popular classical pieces transcribed for beginner piano. The bulk of my teaching experience comes from my college days where I taught secondary piano lessons to college undergraduates and children. My teaching style and methods were solidified in my graduate studies at Indiana University where I was an Associate Instructor of Piano. During this time, I taught group piano classes to music and non-music majors, private piano lessons to both graduate and undergraduate students, and worked as a counselor/practice coach for three summers at the prestigious piano summer festival Indiana University Piano Academy. I typically have students begin by playing something they are comfortable with that they enjoy, and we go from there. I am comfortable teaching a variety of methods and like to help the student achieve their individual goals, whatever those may be.
