It is so important to establish a goal for a student to work towards, so that they know what they're practicing for. I encourage lots of individuality and fun. Music is a way to express yourself. I'm never teaching for the purpose for the student to become better than others to win awards and perform at recitals. Then I take the things I don't like about the method and disregard them (pre-established repetoire, no composition or improv).
