I base my students' curriculum on their individual needs and interests. I strongly believe in learning fundamentals and the principals of music through scales, music theory, ear training, and reading music notation. I believe it is equally important for students to develop their own musical interests and goals so that we can apply all of the practiced skills in a fun and meaningful way. Beginning Piano Students: I use three books in the Piano Adventures series: (Performance, Lesson, and Theory). I work composition into the lesson using the Orff-Schulwerk technique of elemental music creation. In addition, I supplement written musical work as needed. Voice Students: I interview all voice students first to see what their goals are in voice study. I then begin vocal study with the study of posture using Alexander Technique ideas, and a study of breathing and support techniques. Read More

I subscribe to the Faber and Faber Method, Suzuki Method and Bastien Classical Series for beginning students. The repertoire is supplemented with technical and sight reading exercises. I especially subsribe to the Hanon Exercises which are a great tool for building finger strength, dexterity and technical mastery. I expect my students to have a firm understanding of a variety of scales and chords (considered to be the building blocks of music) for which I subscribe to the Guild Musicianship Book as a good starting point. The books I recommend purchasing for piano students is much more dependent on their goals and level of playing. Older drum students can expect to study concepts such as The Rudimental Ritual by Alan Dawson. Older piano students can expect to study chart reading found in The Real Book. I have ideas regarding lesson plans for students but my most important goal is to understand what the student WANTS to study and help them achieve their short term and long term goals in music.
