For beginning students I use graded methods such as Schultz Piano Course or Alfred Basic Piano to enable students to play a song from the very first lesson.  These graded methods introduce basic note reading, the layout of the piano keys, and proper posture and hand positioning, allowing students to progress gradually and systematically to more advanced music.  Interests and skill levels of older beginners and intermediate students are assessed individually, and a plan of study is tailored for them. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. What I do is make a copy of each song or exercise from different books that I have that I think is better for the individual student.
