Instruments: Piano Voice Ukulele

For young beginners of piano, I start with Edna Mae Burnam's Step By Step Book 1, as it begins right away with basic reading of notes and music. From there, I progress into the Faber Piano Adventures Series. Adults will start with the Alfred Adult Piano Course. Voice students are welcome to choose one song each cycle, while I choose two. It's important to me that they get to express themselves and what they like, while also learning new pieces for their repertoire. Read More

It was an absolute blast working with my peers, having the opporunity to test out each other's compositions and ideas. I have always loved teaching and so a vast amount of my teaching has been in the form of informal lessons to my friends because I beleive that anyone can learn to enjoy playing music at any level. In between my two performance degrees, I took classes at UMass Lowell in education and was blown away by how innovative and helpful the program proved to be. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the music theory basics which will always serve as a strong background to their music knowledge and overall muscle memory. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

Instruments: Piano Cello

In addition to my private studio, I have taught as a private instructor, both through music schools in the central NY area and at Ithaca College in Ithaca NY. I have maintained a private studio since early in my undergraduate degree (6 years ago). I am most experienced in classical cello at all levels of experience and all ages, but will adapt my teaching depending on the interests of the student. Read More

Instruments: Piano

For young beginner students, I use either Faber and Faber's Piano Adventures or Bastien Piano Basics. I also supplement these methods with level-appropriate materials from my private library. For adult students, lessons are tailored to meet the student's interests and purpose. Lesson times are learning times, but I try to make the process fun, with time for creativity and music games. Students are also encouraged to bring in music that they want to learn, which gives me additional opportunies to teach each student how to practice. Read More

Instruments: Guitar Music Classical Guitar Acoustic Guitar

What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I would love to play Rodrigoś Concierto de Aranjuez. It is a three movement piece and resonates the passion and beauty of Spanish music. It is difficult to play but beautiful.

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
I first start off with a easy, slow piece. This helps as a warm up but also as an enjoyable start. I then proceed to right hand techniques followed by scales and arpeggios. I will play/learn 2-3 studies and the same for pieces. I choose 2-3 because it keeps each practice interesting and eliminates redundancy.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I love the guitar. My guitar professor from the Mozarteum called the guitar an ënsemble instrument." The classical guitar in particular demands a versatile approach that goes above and beyond strumming chords. I still remain in awe of what the guitar is able to produce for the willing student!!!!

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I was invited by the Estado Amazonas Govenor of Venezuela to perform for him and other dignitaries. The concert was televised and played on the radio. This was a great honor for me to showcase my talents!

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I like using Hal Leonard and the Christopher Parkening technique. Hal Leonard teaches a variety of styles while the Parkening technique offers great classical techniques with a fantastic practice approach and pedagogy.

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
The most challenging aspect of the guitar is for the student to bring out his/her passion through the guitar. This must be done utilizing all of the techniques of the guitar. The guitar will sound your passion if you let it. That is the real challenge for any instrument.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Absolutely! My first teacher taught me folk and doo wop from the 50s. He was very patient and exuded a love for the guitar and music in general. His teaching style was spot on and his passion was very contagious!

When will I start to see results?
This is up to the student. With daily, focused practice, students can achieve advancement quickly. Also, review of content and pieces is vital.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
This depends on how interested the child is. Does the child listen to a particular instrument and inquire about the styles of music played on that instrument? Is the child agreeing to work at practicing daily or when able to?

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Quality over quanity. One can put 5 hours of practice into 3. Being focused and realistic with time is key. Look at time management. How many hours can I realistically practice? Practicing everyday is very important even if that means 15 minutes a day!
