Then I like to begin to work on finger shape when playing, as well as basic scales. The most effective teachers that I have had were teachers who recognized these important factors in the student-teacher relationship- that the best education experiences occur when both the student and the teacher embark on a positively-reinforced exploration together as opposed to the teacher solely dictating negatively to the student. I teach scale positions and chords, improvising, and use various methods of piano repertoire, the students learning style dictates the structure of instruction. My students learn to play folk tunes "by ear" and transpose them to each of the 12 keys, including the minor keys. In addition, my students compose their music in order to learn to read music. We learn "fun music" as well as pop, and classical. I realize that each student is a unique individual with different learning preferences. With each student, I design a different approach that caters to the student's needs.
