I cater my teaching and methods to each individual student and his/her needs and goals. For beginners, I often use Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements. After progressing past that, the Rubank books and Hite etudes work for many students. Starting around 8th grade, I introduce solo repertoire appropriate to their level. It is my goal to remove students from methods as soon as possible- somewhere around early intermediate skill level, so that we may engage with more meaningful repertoire from the 'greats', as well as give the students the tools to take agency over their own repertoire choices, including transcriptions of popular media. My musical journey began at nine years old with piano lessons - not at all an uncommon beginning but an important one. Less than two years later I joined the band playing clarinet. As a high school student, all-state performances and honor bands fiilled many weekends, and I had the privilege of playing regularly in my church on the piano. While playing in a youth symphony as a senior, we toured in Austria absorbing centers of musical history and playing in four uniquely different venues including a wing of the Schonbrunn Palace. I would have to say my main approach to teaching is figuring out what works best for each individual student, seeing as though everyone learns differently and at different paces. I began teaching back in my sophomore year of high school when one of my friends wanted to learn how to play the piano. I gave them half hour lessons once a week and tailored my teaching to fit what techniques they wanted to learn. After that, I began branching out and teaching other friends, and eventually found myself helping out the middle school bands during my study hall.
