Beginning students, especially children, need more guidance and structure to the lessons to get started, but its still important to keep them interested , engaged and having fun, so Ill typically integrate lessons on basic technique with songs that children already know. For teens and adults, I like to find out what type of music my students listen to and gear our training toward using the instrument the choose to become a musician. Since everyone is unique, I tailor my lesson plans to each individual. I then ask them to perform anything of their choice to assess their ability level (if applicable). After that, I tell them what immediately needs to be addressed and how this will work with their longterm goal.
