The first thing a teacher must do is figure out how to motivate a student to practice. This can be done differently for different students. I will list some things that I have found that work. 1) Set a practice schedule/timer/alarm 2) I work on mindset and practice techniques to reduce practice session frustration/anxiety and increase positivity and feel good emotions 3) The student selects songs to practice in addition to scales, lesson book or repertoire 4) Parental support and priority 5) Listening to music outside of lesson 6) Practice one concept at a time 7) Limit faster passages to smaller groups of notes, practice slow with different patterns. 8) more in lesson!....... I have gained a passion for teaching from the people that taught and inspired me. I have worked with high school students and middle school students and find it rewarding to see them grow and progress into better musicians. I have enjoyed finding ways to keep my students motivated and wanting to come back and pursue their talent that they can spread with the world. I want each student to be able to study what it is that they find interesting and fun, so I will try to include music from musicians that my students take interest in. Read More

As a performing musician, we are always giving and receiving knowledge to our colleagues and pals. I've been teaching people things about music since the end of high school, when I began to really feel like I had a grasp on what "good playing" sounds like. It wasn't until college when I sat down with someone and gave them a free one-on-one lesson for the first time. At that moment, even though my primary passion is performing music, I felt ecstatic that I was actually able to teach someone something that they'll remember throughout their days as a musician. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements as well as learn the basic techniques on how to play the saxophone. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, regardless of their ability level. Read More

Teaching, for me, began when I was in high school; I taught summer drumset lessons at McQuaid Jesuit and taught Karate at Martial Arts America. This desire to teach was incorporated with my love of music...leading me to pursue a degree in Music Education. I began performing and competing in fourth grade, which continued into my college years. In my third year of undergraduate work, these elements of music led me as well as three of my percussion buddies to performances and clinics (that we taught) at the New York State School Music Association and the New York State Band Director's Association conventions. I have taught nearly every instrument in a standard orchestra. I have taught singing, guitars and such, music theory composing and sight singing as well as sight reading and music history. It is always essential that the student is excited about the genre(s) we use in learning music. Yes if music is not fun then it is worthless. That being said fun is a many splendor thing. I started teaching guitar in my teens. Read More

My main goal is for students to discover all the music has to offer, beyond simply being able to play their instrument. I come from a strict classical background but now find myself having to be a versatile musician who appreciates and can perform all styles of music. Whether music is just a hobby, a future career, or just a trial, I aim to unlock a new creative potential and form of expression that encourages a lifelong love for all music. Read More
