Feeling and noticing that there has been gradual success is key to inspiring students to continue with their instrument. Playing a musical instrument presents numerous challenges mentally, physically, and sometimes emotionally. It is equally up to the teacher and the student to recognize the growth that has occured week to week. As long as the work is being put forth by both parties, finding success (even if small) will not be a difficult feat. Read More

I will work with each student to help them understand the fundamentals of jazz, for example, knowing major scales, minor scales, and all of the modes that we typically see in most jazz repertoire. For students that are more advanced we will work on learning how to play over common chord progressions and learn how to play songs found in the Great American Songbook. For students at a higher level, we can work on cementing more advanced techniques such as how to play over chord substitutions. Read More

As a performing musician, we are always giving and receiving knowledge to our colleagues and pals. I've been teaching people things about music since the end of high school, when I began to really feel like I had a grasp on what "good playing" sounds like. It wasn't until college when I sat down with someone and gave them a free one-on-one lesson for the first time. At that moment, even though my primary passion is performing music, I felt ecstatic that I was actually able to teach someone something that they'll remember throughout their days as a musician. I've been teaching privately for 10 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for all my students. I've discovered that a combination of jazz and modern music as well as having fun can enhance a student's development and passion for playing music. I encourage my students to enter competitions, recitals and to start their own band playing cover songs and original songs. Read More

As with any teaching method, consistency is attendance breeds the best learning environment. Read More

Music is very much a personal subject unique to each person, and I create different lesson plans for every student I have. I have acquired a large amount of sheet music, textbooks, and other sources that I am happy to share with my students. Along with learning the technique of your instrument, I also place emphasis on teaching ear training, aural skills, basic music theory, and writing their own music. Read More
