Over the years, my students have consistently placed high in the Western Region Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Orchestra, and several of them have gone on to the extremely competitive Connecticut All-State Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Orchestra. I work with my students from a method book, and then move to  add scales, etudes, and repertoire as they advance. Additionally, if I start teaching an older student as a beginner, I believe it is important to teach them at their intellectual level. I never intend to talk down to my students, and I always strive to meet them where they are to raise their level of understanding. I am a large proponent of fundamentals, and will always encourage students to refine these techniques first. This will include scales, tone production, voicing and overtones, and more! Alongside this will be a combination of student choice pieces and etudes from various books. I like to start with the Melodious and Progressive Studies by David Hite, then progress to Ferling's 48 etudes for more advanced students. I use the software program "Finale" in order to create the musical compositions that I prepare for my students. I always accompany my students on the piano. My teaching includes all aspects of music; Musical theory, sight singing, as well as Music History. My teaching style allows the child to have fun while they learn their instrument, but I emphasize a strong practice regiment. Your child will understand that while learning music and an instrument can be fun, there will be some work involved if they want to become great.
