I began teaching lessons after my freshman year of college in 2010 and have had students consistently since. I have worked with students from the very beginning stages to those at the college level. My students have successfully auditioned for CMEA festivals (Connecticut Music Educators Association) and NYSSMA festivals (New York State School Music Association). For students who are just beginning the instrument, I like to include the Rubank Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Method Books for Saxophone as well as the Selected Duets both by H. Voxman. I believe one of the most important things in teaching is meeting the student where they are. It is vital to know a student and their strengths and weaknesses before giving them cookie-cutter assignments. As such, much of the early stages of my lessons involve a fair amount of adjustments and experimentation until we find the pace and flow that works for the student. Once we have found that pace, setting realistic goals and finding ways to engage and encourage the student to keep up a consistent practice schedule become the main priority. Read More

This is a very tricky topic, because every student learns differently on every ability level therefore, I like to use a combination of various tools. The Essential Elements works great for younger beginners, where the Rubank books are more suited for older or very disciplined students. I work each week to plan out how best to convey the information needed, but if things need to change in the lesson, I adapt to provide what is needed for the student to still grow.
