Now fast-forward to March 2021, I was hired by Presidio ISD to teach middle school band. From then until May 2022, I got to teach middle school band along with choir and mariachi. I also occasionally helped at the local high school. What I have learned while teaching middle school, especially with beginners, is that playing along can be helpful initially. For Beginner, I usually use Hal Leonard's Essential book for younger students and Rubank's elementary book for older students. These books can use up to intermediate students and some easy solo pieces from the trombone gems collection by H.A. VanderCook. For intermediate to advanced students playing trombone for more than two years, I would use Melodious Etudes for Trombone Selected from the Vocalises of Marco Bordogni book one and Arban Complete Method for Trombone and Euphonium. During the first lesson, I get to know the student, find out their interests and determine which course will be the best start. The most important thing for all students is to keep the lessons engaging and fun. Piano: For younger beginning students, I typically start with the Alfred Basic Piano Library.
