In teaching young students, I find most success in a repeat-after-me style. It is easiest for students to understand how to create something when supplied with a quality example to mimic. I teach my students the importance of musicality and expression alongside the technical aspects of playing their instrument. If a student is looking to study something particular, such as preparing a solo for a competition, I not only help them work on the piece, but I aim to supply them with successful practice methods as well. I like to understand a student on a musical level, thus letting their ability level and their drive push me in the direction most useful for the student's success. I encourage them by setting specified goals and show them how to attain them while guiding them through any necessary musical concepts they may meet along the way. I gain from my students' accomplishments a sense of pride, which makes me work just as hard for my students as they do for me. Read More

I love nothing more than being able to help my students develop and grow a passion for music! It is also important that each student progresses at their own pace. The great thing about one on one teaching is each of my students get individual time with me versus being in a band class with lots of other students. Private lessons allow me to pace each lesson based on each individual student and tailor each lesson based on what type of music a student might be interested in learning. Read More
Instruments: Trombone
For beginning students I teach the fundamentals: holding the instrument, explaining how it works, and then how to make a sound. I focus on sound first and foremost, trying to make a pure sound, and then hearing and being able to understand how the instrument works. I don't get into simply reading exercises until the student has a firm grasp and enthusiasm for the instrument. With older students I work with what their goals are; for example if All-State Band is the goal we focus on playing band excerpts and the level of fundamentals needed to get there. Read More

The first thing I do when teaching a student is to learn what musical goals and aspirations the student may have. Then, depending on age and experience, I build a custom program for the student, which may include using various books, resources, and even materials which I have created. I have found that this is not only the most effective way for me to teach but also the most effective way to connect with students where they are and for them to learn at their own pace while also enjoying the process. For beginners, I like to start with the basic fundamentals of the instrument. Brass instruments are notoriously demanding, so making sure we have a solid grasp on the fundamentals is paramount. I like to start with the Essential Elements for Band and the Elementary Method for Cornet and Trumpet books. Once we have the fundamentals, I like to start introducing some solo pieces, jazz, and pop tunes that will allow the student to get a feel for all the music they can play on this instrument! I always explore different methods that might fit the age and personality of the student but for keyboard lessons I have found success with the Alfred Piano Method. Instrumental lessons usually follow the method book that is selected by their school band director. Beyond that I have a large library of supplementary music to expand the students interest with new styles and composers.I'm very flexible with the method books and after I get to know the student I can select a method that would work the best for instruction.
